Status

This species was previously known as Clavaria zollingeri. However, a study by Olariaga et al. (2025) found that this name had been misapplied to the North American Violet Coral. The North American species had been previously described as Clavaria amethystina. Olariaga et al. (2025) found that Clavaria amethystina was widespread in Europe and North America. A second, less common, violet species was also found in North America: Clavaria violaceopulchra. It is possible that this species also occurs in the eastern United States and historic records of Clavaria zollingeri in Maryland may conflate the two species.
