Status
The wild Bellwort species found in Maryland are all native. Most appear to be secure but one, Large-flowered Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora), is endangered (S1).
Description
Bellworts are herbaceous plants with pendulous flowers. They can sometimes be difficult to identify to species when flowers and fruit are absent. You will want to note if the leaves are sessile or perfoliate and whether the leaves are pubescent or glabrous (smooth) on the underside. If flowers are present, note the relative length of the undivided and divided portion of the styles.
Whenever flowers are absent, Bellworts can be confused with False Solomon’s Seals (Maianthemum spp.) or Yellow Fairybells (Prosartes lanuginosa)
