Description
Mature megaspores, and at least a hand lens, are necessary to identify Isoetes species. The megaspores form at the base of the leaves. In Appalachian Quillwort, a velum covers about 25% of the sporangium. The megaspore surface is covered in an open, reticulate ornamentation.
