Status
Hericium erinaceus (in the broad sense) includes several species from different parts of the World. Molecular phylogenetic data suggest that there is a species in Eastern North America that is phylogenetically distinct from its European counterpart (Hericium erinaceus in the strict sense). Koga and Thorn (2023) called this species Hericium carolinense. The type (original) locality for this new species is Laurel, Maryland. It remains unclear how many species of the Hericium erinaceus complex occur in Maryland so we have kept these species separate for now. It is possible that all ‘Hericium erinaceus’ in Maryland should be called H. carolinense.

Typically found in knots and hollows of hardwood trees.
