Status

There are six species in the genus Chelone, all native to North America. Only two of these species occur in Maryland - White and Red Turtlehead. White Turtlehead blooms in late August or September.

Where To Find

Wet woods and meadows, marshes, seeps and streambanks, throughout Maryland (Choukas-Bradley, in Marilandica).

Relationships

Primary, regional, larval host plant to the Maryland state insect, Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly, which is state-rare. The foliage is bitter and usually avoided by White-tailed deer, according to Illinois Wildflowers, although, according to Choukas-Bradley, in Marilandica, deer like the plant and have reduced populations in Maryland.
