Status
Scots Pine is a rare non-native pine, introduced from Europe, that has spread to roadbanks and open areas and is now considered established in Maryland.
Description
The bark of Scots Pine is smooth and reddish-brown to orange on young trees, darker and fissured on older trunks. The needles are short, stiff, usually twisted, and in bundles of two (Brown and Brown, 1972).
Relationships
Host plant for various moth species including Adana Pine Tip Moth, Red Pine Tip Moth, Pitch Twig Moth, and Retinia metallica (Gilligan, Wright, & Gibson, 2008).
