Status
The Eastern Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum) is a small, nondescript species of turtle, often encountered away from water. This turtle is at home in a variety of vegetated shallow water habitats with a muddy bottom, including ponds, ditches, swamps and marshes. It is also quite tolerant of brackish water, and has an affinity for tidal marshes and barrier islands (Conant & Collins, 1998). This turtle has two hinged plates on the plastron, allowing it to close its shell more effectively In Maryland, this turtle is known primarily from the coastal plain and piedmont, west to Washington Co. (Maryland DNR website). Harris (1975) lists the species as occurring west to Garrett Co.
