Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis) is a small terrestrial lizard species of wooded habitats through a large portion of North America. This drably-colored, well-camouflaged skink may be easily overlooked as it skitters inconspicuously through leaf litter and debris on the forest floor. Little Brown Skinks are quick to retreat under cover if they feel threatened. In Maryland, this lizard is restricted to the coastal plain (Conant & Collins, 1998: Maryland DNR site).
