Status
Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis) is a small, portly anuran, the only representative of the family Microhylidae in Maryland. This secretive species is typically found in moist habitats (including seasonal wetlands) within areas of loose, sandy soil, where it often hides beneath cover objects or debris. While normally inconspicuous, heavy rains in spring to summer often trigger large numbers of these strange frogs to call and return en masse to breeding pools for a short period, after which, they disperse into the surrounding habitat again. This vulnerable species is restricted to the coastal plain in Maryland, where it is considered endangered, with a state ranking of S1-S2 (highly state rare/state rare) (Maryland DNR site; Conant & Collins, 1998).
