Found scattered or in groups fused together on ground under conifers (sometimes
hardwoods).

Description

Cap: White, pale gray becoming purple-black in age, often concentrically zoned; velvety; ridged near margin; flat or concave; flesh purplish/brownish-black, tough with two layers (top light, lower dark). Fertile surface: Covered with spines which are at first
blue-gray, soon gray/purplish-black; decurrent. (Spore print is white
which distinguishes it from any of the Hydnellums, which have brown
spores.) Stalk: Covered with spines or woolly tomentum, often swollen at base (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
